IN
MOTION
150
YEARS OF
DRAWING
9
February to 1 June
2008.
The
entire museum building will be dedicated to presenting
one of the most extensive drawing exhibitions ever held in Norway
this spring. The main exhibition
features an historical perspective on the technique, with a wide range
of
artists and techniques spanning from romantic nationalism to more
contemporary,
independent forms of expression: from Gude’s sketches, Werenskiold’s
and
Kittelsen’s illustrations, Munch’s drawings in pencil, newspaper
drawings and cartoons
to contemporary artists’ reinterpretation of the tradition featuring
artists
such as Bjørn Ransve, Olav Christopher Jenssen, Vanessa Baird,
Tiril Schrøder and
Sverre Malling. In addition to Norwegian artists, works by Finnish and
Swedish
artists will be exhibited as well. Tove Jansson’s Mummitroll and llon
Wikland’s
Ronja Røverdatter will be presented together with artists such
as Jockum
Nordström (Sweden)
and a number of young contemporary artists representing different
Nordic
countries.
Drawing
is a technique that we all can relate to. The
technique is as diverse as the themes it is designed to capture, and
spans from
the spontaneously jotted down sketches to detailed engineering plans.
Our focus
has been on drawing in the narrowest context: pencil, crayon, pen,
water colour
or coal on paper; but we also exhibit site-specific and relational
works in
addition to several animations. We have left out what can be called
functional
drawings: technical drawings, engineering drafts and architectural
designs. Despite
the relatively narrow definition and scope of the exhibition, many more
than
the 51 artists (see separate list) selected for this exhibition could
have been
displayed. Our objective has been to present several works from each of
a representative
selection of artists.
The
starting point for the exhibition has been the
major collection of Gude sketches that Lillehammer Art
Museum
possesses. We have also registered the increasing popularity of drawing
as an art
form. In recent years quite a number of exhibitions featuring drawings
have
been presented both in Norway
and abroad.
Curators
for the exhibition are Cecilie Skeide and
Janeke Meyer Utne.
